I find it surprising how New York City’s Early Man has failed to receive significant attention in recent times, given the popularity of various bands today who are trying to recreate the sound of either 80’s thrash or traditional metal. It’s hard to truly call Early Man’s sound thrash metal on “Death Potion”, although it clearly displays elements of the subgenre, at times resembling early Metallica or Megadeth. The fact that there are also some strong characteristics of traditional metal at work here is perhaps the reason Early Man hasn’t really been picked up by the “revival thrash” movement, as the band tends to go at a pace suited for King Diamond or early Accept almost as much as it enjoys charging away into Exodus territory. Regardless of who you might want to compare Early Man to, “Death Potion” stands out from the rest of today’s revival thrash scene largely because of this traditional metal aesthetic it incorporates.
