Spiritus Mortis has been around since 1987 and the label claims that theyre the oldest doom metal band from Finland. They could be right, but thats a fact that Im not interested in. Its without any doubt however that they were not really successful in the past. They only released 2 studio albums, despite their high quality music. Due to all this, vocalist Vesa Lampi left the band.
But the band continued writing new songs and in 2009 they found a new vocalist and that man is one of the most famous in the doom scene, namely Sami Hynninen who we all know from the mighty Reverend Bizarre (Albert Witchfinder) and The Puritan. As the music was already written, the influence from Sami isnt that big on their sound. Musically its a continuation of “Fallen”, but more pure and heavier. There are really some good songs on it which have a great rocking vibe. Besides that, there are also some slow and darker songs on it, like Death Bride and Curved Horizon.
“The God Behind The God” has become a very good heavy/doom metal album and hopefully the band gets its recognition. They are on tour in October this year. Check them out then and until then spent your time listening to this album.
